Rajah & Tann Singapore LLP Shortlisted for GAR's "Best Boutique or Regional Practice"

Rajah & Tann Singapore LLP has been ranked among the top arbitration practices in the world and also shortlisted for regional practice that impressed in the past year by the Global Arbitration Review ("GAR"). We have been shortlisted for the GAR's "Best Boutique or Regional Practice". The GAR ranks the top arbitration practices each year; and this category is for the most impressive practices which are focused singly on arbitration or full-service firms with a particular regional focus.

This year, we are shortlisted alongside (among others) Three Crowns and Volterra Fietta. Three Crowns is a 6-partner breakaway from Freshfields, headed by Jan Paulson, with presence in Paris, London and DC. Volterra is a breakaway from Latham and Watkins, and is focused on arbitration and public international law disputes, centred in London. They are both top-tier practices and it is a huge coup for us to be ranked alongside them. This shows we, too, can be world-beaters.

In its publication, GAR reports that "[Rajah & Tann Singapore] secured a significant anti-suit injunction against Iranian parties over a major field development and has broken the international firm's monopoly on investor-state cases with a claim against Madagscar and an instruction to defend Indoneisa in ICSID annulment proceedings."

This is a testament to the regionalisation efforts that the firm has been making over the years.

Lau Kok Keng Appointed as Arbitrator of the Court of Arbitration for Sport

Lau Kok Keng has been appointed as arbitrator of the Court of Arbitration for Sport ("CAS") for the period 2015-2018.

Based in Lausanne, Switzerland, the CAS is overseen by the International Council of Arbitration for Sport, and counts nearly 300 members from 87 countries who are chosen for their specialist knowledge of arbitration and sports law. Kok Keng joins the ranks of this body of arbitrators as the only new Singaporean member to be appointed for the current term.

CAS is an international quasi-judicial body established in 1984 to settle disputes related to sport, and is currently led by Australia' International Olympic Committee ("IOC") Vice-President John Coates. All Olympic International Federations have recognised the jurisdiction of the CAS. While it was originally established by the IOC to deal with disputes arising during the Olympic Games, the CAS now also tackles a diverse range of cases including those involving anti-doping violations, athlete misconduct, player transfers, and disputes involving sports governing bodies.

CAS has two decentralised offices in New York and Sydney, respectively. Special ad hoc panels are also established for major sporting events such as the Olympics and the Commonwealth Games.
